An Expression of Gratitude—Jan's Story

Jan Hayden and her late husband, Ron

Jan Hayden and her late husband, Ron, had such exceptional experiences with Providence Hospice Napa Valley that Jan was inspired to make a legacy gift in honor of the remarkable people there.

Jan Hayden is one tenacious woman: She needs little sleep, never takes a nap. She painted the entire interior of her sprawling home by herself. She had energy to burn, so in retirement she dedicated herself to helping nonprofits. As a volunteer, Jan tried different organizations before landing among a kind circle of friends at Providence Hospice Napa Valley. It has made for four fulfilling years.

Yet in 2020, Jan endured a year more daunting than many faced during the pandemic. Ron, her husband of 43 years, died of a respiratory illness. Jan was thankful Ron could return home from the hospital for his final days. She describes the hospice care Ron received as professional, responsive and unfailingly compassionate.

Jan's challenges continued into 2021 when one day, during her volunteer shift , she lost consciousness and awoke in an ambulance rushing to the hospital. She was frightened and confused, but immediately comforted by the first face she saw, our executive director. This kind face would stay with her for several hours in the emergency room during the many tests she endured before being released.

Deeply touched by these two experiences, Jan has put aside a legacy gift in honor of the remarkable care and compassionate group of people who, she says, without question, so richly deserve this heartfelt expression of gratitude.
