Practicing What They Preach

Warren and Maritza Nelson

Warren and Maritza Nelson made including Providence Community Health Foundation Napa Valley in their estate plan a priority after Maritza lost her mother in 2013 and nearly lost Warren before he underwent a lung transplant

In his career as a financial advisor, Warren Nelson always recommended charitable giving to his clients with the hope that it would be a priority in both their daily lives and in their estate planning. It's something that he and his wife, Maritza, a songwriter and former European languages, literature and history professor, have always practiced in their own lives as well.

Warren is now retired, but before that "he regularly reviewed charities for their community benefit and their efficiency with donations," says Maritza. "Providence Community Health Foundation Napa Valley is one he often recommended—and one we've supported for years."

While the Nelsons have long supported our annual fundraising events, two experiences in particular made including our organization in their estate plan a priority.

"In 2013, my mother passed away," Maritza says. "She was fortunate to receive hospice care during her final days. It was phenomenal, because they helped us all find grace and dignity in the end of her life.

"Then in 2014, I came very close to losing Warren before he underwent a lung transplant. Not certain what his outcome would be, we reviewed our charitable giving. Knowing he would continue to help others after he was gone brought him comfort and gave purpose to his life.

"Those experiences reminded us that life is full of ups and downs, and you have to treasure the ups. It also made clear how important it is to support those organizations that are there when people—both patients and loved ones—are at their most vulnerable. So, we're proud to support Providence Community Health Foundation Napa Valley."
